Unnecessary Explosions

I was browsing the web the other day and I came across a funny post about adding random explosions to gifs. While they're all pretty silly, I thought of this class and how these short clips could be used for inspiration if anyone ever wants to try animating explosions.

A lot of these exist, but not all of them are that funny. I think what makes this specific batch really successful, is the timing of the explosions and how they fit so naturally into what's already happening in the gif. My favorite is definitely number one. I love how smaller explosions go off near his feet as he's stumbling. They set up his final explosion really well.

Visualizing Education Topics

I work as a TA for the Computer Science department and it is one of my favorite things that I do. But one of the big issues with helping students grasp CS topics is that it is hard to connect the lines of code on your screen to the actions that they represent.

One of the first ways I learned to cope with my understanding in these subjects was to draw pictures. Sometimes pictures drawn on a board or sheet of paper have limitations that animations can overcome. Modeling abstract or 3D concepts is the best way to visualize and learn.

 
This is a library of gifs featured on wiki pages that help explain mathematical concepts.

Benham's Disk

Every once in a while, I will discover something that absolutely blows my mind and I will obsess over that thing until I can seem to wrap my mind around it. This thing that I have recently found out about is not only still stumping me, it stumps everybody. Scientists are still unable to figure out exactly why this phenomenon exists. It is called "Benham's disk". It was discovered by a man in 1895 who made a toy disk that looks like this:
A plain black and white disk. But when spun, extremely fast it looks like this:
You can see some color inside the disk when it spins very fast. That's interesting in itself, but there's something far more interesting about this illusion. The color that you are seeing within the wheel is not the same color that everybody else sees when they look at it. I personally see a light brown color in the spinning wheel like this:
Some people see olive green, cyan or yellow, but everybody sees their own color in the wheel, and some people don't see any color (just black and white). Scientists have still not yet determined why this is, but they have guessed that it has to do with the fact that the human eye responds to red, green, and blue at different rates. 

This illusion was first discovered by spinning an actual disk very fast, but it can now be viewed with a simple repeating sequence of 6 frames:

Cinemagraphs: Classy Gifs

The smoke animating we did in class made me want to take a deeper look into Cinemagraphs. Cinemagraphs are still photos animated in select areas, very much like our cigarettes and chimneys from class. Cinemagraphs is actually a trademarked name from Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg, though the idea of animating a still photo has been present for much longer than the trademark.

Beck’s and Burg’s website, cinemagraphs.com, features a lot of their work from around New York City. Cinemagraphs are GIFs, but somehow much more emotive than what one might normally associate with a .gif. It is very much like watching a regular video, but the stillness of most of the scene adds an element that can be very soothing or haunting—like the whole world is frozen except for that one point. It’s an interesting glimpse into a moment.


The process of creating a Cinemagraph (or a gif in general) is relatively simple, considering how beautiful and impressive it can be. All it takes is a recording or some photos and you’ve got yourself the basis of a cinemagraph!

I've done some posts in the past about transformations using make up, lighting and CGI effects in maya and other programs. One viral gif I came across this week features Emma Watson taking off her face to reveal that she was Sophia Vegera (Modern Family) this entire time…

If you haven't been able to figure out this video digitally added both actresses faces to this original video. The original video is actually a promotional video from a latex mask website.  The original video comes from this person named Kerry Johnson who's been making professional latex masks since 1996 usually for things like sci fi conventions.  Of the transformations that I have been looking up in this class, this has been one of the creepiest ones I've seen so far.

Cinemagraph: A different approach to a photograph

The use of video and still photography has, in recent years, been combined through the creation of the GIF,  or a Graphics Interchange Format. The idea of a more stylized GIF began with New York City-based Fashion Photographer Jaime Beck. She worked with Kevin Berg, a web designer who also worked with motion graphics extensively. They utilized the cinemagraph for their work beginning in 2011. Their main website depicting these Cinemagraphs are beautifully composed and very subtly animated.
In an article from "The Atlantic" written by Nicholas Jackson, here's a few words from Beck on the work: "We began seriously creating them during fashion week this past February. Our first few animated images were sequenced still shots looped in rapid succession which is a fairly common way of making an animated image. From there we began utilizing more fluid motion isolated in certain parts of an image to capture a moment of time, but also to un-freeze a still photograph by showing that moment's temporal movement. The process involves still and video photography but editing is very manual and varies greatly from one to another so we're routinely solving new problems when creating them."

Web Animation

I really have a taste for Graffiti Art. England based artist Banksy has a few pieces that I think are pretty cool. Someone took some of his art and made animated GIF's of some of his photos and I think It really adds to the message. The original link can be found here but below is an example.

This would be pretty easy to recreate in Ae with even the puppet tool.

Cinemagraphs

Earlier in the week I had decided what I wanted to blog about but that went out the window because of a website I found using stumbleupon. This is probably the most excited I've been for a post all semester.

New York fashion photographer Jamie Beck teamed up with motion graphic artist Kevin Burg to create some really incredible cinemagraphs. Though they begin as photographs, Burg adds a subtle motion to one element in the picture, such as the subjects hair or leaves blowing in the background. I think what makes it so great is the way that only one element in the photo shows evidence of a breeze or whatever the effect may be.
