Free music

Most of you may already know this but I thought I'd post it anyway. If you're looking for free music to play around with and add to video projects or future animation projects check out freeplaymusic.com

  1. I have used freeplay in the past, but am not convinced that the music is actually free. While they do permit use for personal use and educational use, the terms and conditions detailed in the site are quite restricting. Various situations, such as for film festivals or radio use, require payment for the music. While there is a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the TV industry regarding the use of music, it makes me uneasy to use music that I don't have full rights to (for example, when I submit films to festivals that feature music I got from freeplay). Has anyone come across issues with the licensing of freeplay music?

  2. Anna is correct. Freeplaymusic is not at all free, even for student or educational projects. It is not so expensive compared with other options but you still must pay.
I strongly encourage you to use original music that you can generate with tools like GarageBand and other software like PD, SuperCollider etc. Also there are sites like mobygratis.com which are actually free if your film is independent and not-for-profit. Another site is sonnyboo which works under Creative Commons or CC (more about that later.
But hink of all your local starving musicians, indi bands and friends that you can tap to create music for your film for the prize af a good pizza and some good credits!
