The new movie, which is scheduled for release July 10, 2015, focuses on the Minions search for a master starting from way before humans even inhabited the planet. The Minions have trouble keeping their masters around and eventually become so dejected they stop trying, until three brave Minions, Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, set off on a mission to find a new master who can handle them. Their adventures take them all the way to New York City, where antics ensue.

Minions
Many of you know who, or what, the Minions are and have seen them featured in Despicable Me 1&2 and even in a few of their own shorts. But, in July this year you are going to be able to see them like never before! The Minions are getting their very own movie! The Minions gained a cult following after Despicable Me first came out. They all had different personalities and were adorably idiotic and so cute that people could not help but love everything they did. The creators capitalized off of their popularity and continued making shorts featuring only the Minions and largely ignoring the other, human, characters in the movie. One of the most famous Minion videos is their "Banana Song".

I love the animation used for the Despicable Me and am incredibly excited to see how the Minions movie turns out. However, the effort it takes to animate an entire feature length film with the depth and realism that is in both Despicable Me and the upcoming Minions movie is incredible. Universal made a video giving people just a little bit of an insight into what actually goes into making these movies.
It is amazing to see how many people it takes to simply animate the face of a single character. The Minions and Despicable Me are works of animation genius and show some of the incredible things 3D animation can do. Now here is my favorite Minion video.

making of ... king kong
so i have been slacking on my posts, that's why there are two posts from this week and I've just had an urge to look more into the making of some feature films -- Titanic 3D in my last post, and now King Kong (2005)
this first clip talks with creators of many different crew members of the animation and production crew of the 2005 King Kong. surprisingly, the process began almost 10 years before the release in 1995 ... for parts of the film, there were so many aspects that were completely remade from scratch and many used stop-motion animation to recreate scenes of the film!! from 2min onward, they discuss the King Kong film and around the 6:00 minute mark is when they start explicitly discuss the stop-motion and CG recreations of NYC and such
in this clip, NBC took a behind-the-scenes look at the whole animation and recreation process of the King Kong film at the Universal lot. I think its really interesting that so much of the animation is "outsourced" to other organizations and the producers / Universal just supervise. WETA Digital helped animate and graphically design the 2005 edition of the film. At 3:40, they start to discuss the audio animation and depth of recording the special FX and sounds.
i was first confused as to why the clip was called "king kong 360 3D" -- after a few minutes into the clip, i realized they were talking about the Universal studio animation park RIDE!!! but still, it is still so interesting to see the massive amount of time and energy to create a film, let along a real-life ride.

Great Special Effects Video
I remembered watching a pretty interesting show when I was out in LA with the Ithaca program. The school organized a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood. I found the full show on YouTube. The show uses audience members to demonstrate special effects. Some elements are very simplistic but I believe it is pretty effective way to teach people tricks used in cinema that may have no prior knowledge of the production of films. It is definitely a little corny but was a fun show to see live. There was an intern that was also part of the show that appeared to be having a blast, so If someone could land that internship out in LA I'm sure it would be a fun experience.
